Instagram is one of the most used and downloaded social media in the world with more than 1 billion monthly active users. Instagram is known as a social photo sharing app with many features, such as stories, live, and feeds. Instagram feed is the first and most popular features from Instagram with more than 95 million photos being uploaded on Instagram everyday.

Objective

  • Discover how people use Instagram mobile app to draft and upload their single/multiple photo(s).
  • Find users’ pain points when using Instagram’s app to draft and upload photos.
  • Create solutions to solve those pain points.

Scenario

You want to upload your last holiday photos on Instagram. You choose several photos that you have taken before with different ratios, angle, and quality. After the photos are ready to be uploaded, suddenly you decide to upload it 2 hours from now and make your work as a draft and will post it in 2 hours.

Test Task

  • Open instagram app on their mobile phone
  • Select some photos with multiple photos mode
  • Rearrange and edit the photos if they needed
  • Write a caption
  • Tag people and set the location if they wanted
  • Click the back button and save it as a draft
  • Open the instagram app again (in their preference time)
  • Upload the draft that they have save before
  • Reviewing their post at home and profile section

Sampler

All of the participants in the study know Instagram, already have an Instagram account, and already have past experiences using the application.

There were 6 participants in total, aged from 17–45 years old (3 male and 3 female).

Instagram Photo’s Draft and Upload Flow

Synthesis

After conducting surveys, I analyzed and synthesized feedback from users. I wrote down every feedback and grouped them into urgent and not urgent problems based on the user’s perspective.

Urgent

  • Can’t upload some photos with different ratio
  • Too many steps of draft
  • Scheduled photo(s) upload

Not Urgent

  • Can’t upload some photo ratios
  • Undo and redo features

Define Problem

  1. Difficulties in select photos with different ratio (5/6)

When users want to select photos with a different ratio, they must set it into square or the same ratio with the previous photo. Other than that, Instagram only provides 3 types of ratio, which is 1:1, 4:5, and 1,91:1. There is some ratio that is usually available from our device camera, but can’t be accepted by Instagram, such as 3:4 and 9:16. So, users need to crop or edit the photo on other editing apps if they want to post the full photo(s).

2. Difficulties in undo or redo during editing process (3/6)

Instagram doesn’t provide undo and redo, so users can’t reverse or reverse the action that they have done. Besides, undo and redo is a common function in other editing apps and most of the participants prefer to edit their photo(s) on other photo editing apps.

3. Difficulties in manage draft (4/6)

If users want to save their work as a draft, users need to go back from the caption, filtering and editing step then select the “save draft” option. There are a bit too many steps to save our work as a draft. When we want to delete our draft, we need to click “manage”, select our draft, click the checkmark on the top right, then click “discard”. Other than that, we can’t set our draft to be uploaded in specific time, so we need to go back to Instagram when we need to upload our photos.

UI Sketches

I sketch out some possible solutions for instagram users pain points. The solution was based on users’ critical pain point and to improve users’ experience.

After I have big pictures of the solutions, I tried to make low fidelity prototypes to make the solutions look more realistic. The left side is “before” and the right side is “after”.

Conclusion

While doing this study, I realized that there are some little things that could affect users’ experience. Instagram has several features that are actively used by the users, so some improvement on detail things will give a better experience for users. I have given some details and new features to improve the users’ experience when draft and upload their photo(s). From this study, I learn to create an experience that is based on the user’s perspective and needs. It has been very exciting and fun for me to conduct this study. This study conducted to complete my assignment on Indonesian Bright Future Mentoring. This is my first time and I know it is still far from perfect. I hope it could be a starting point for me to expand my knowledge about users’ experience. If you have criticism and suggestions, or maybe tips and tricks about this study for me, I really appreciate that.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day!
